Validation of the Sentinel-5 Precursor TROPOMI cloud data with Cloudnet, Aura OMI O<sub>2</sub>–O<sub>2</sub>, MODIS, and Suomi-NPP VIIRS

Abstract. Accurate knowledge of cloud properties is essential to the measurement atmospheric composition from space. In this work we assess quality data three Copernicus Sentinel-5 Precursor (S5P) TROPOMI products: (i) S5P OCRA/ROCINN_CAL (Optical Cloud Recognition Algorithm/Retrieval Information using Neural Networks;Clouds-As-Layers), (ii) OCRA/ROCINN_CRB (Clouds-as-Reflecting Boundaries), and (iii) FRESCO-S (Fast Retrieval Scheme for Clouds Oxygen absorption bands – Sentinel). Target are cloud-top height optical thickness (OCRA/ROCINN_CAL), (OCRA/ROCINN_CRB FRESCO-S), radiometric fraction (all algorithms). The analysis combines examination maps artificial geographical patterns, comparison other satellite (MODIS, NPP-VIIRS, OMI O2–O2), ground-based validation with respect correlative observations (30 April 2018 27 February 2020) Cloudnet network ceilometers, lidars, radars. Zonal mean latitudinal variation similar that data. agrees well NPP VIIRS height, especially low (mostly liquid) clouds. For high clouds, below Cloudnet, while its higher than VIIRS. FRESCO clouds but match on average better As opposed FRESCO, able lowest CTH mode observations. Peculiar patterns identified in products will be mitigated future releases products.
